Description: September 2022 marks 35 years since the Raven first took flight as Lawrence’s corner bookshop specializing in mysteries—we want to commemorate this major milestone with the community we’ve been a part of for so long now! So we’ve planned a whole month packed to the gills with fantastic and free literary events, like this one! Here's what you need to know: being nice is no laughing matter. For those who are craving their next hit of Samantha Irby or Jia Tolentino-style comedic cultural comedy, Kansas City author Mia Mercado’s book will hit the spot. Mercado is bringing She’s Nice Though: Essays on Being Bad at Being Good to the Raven on September 1 at 7 p.m. for a reading and book signing that will have you in stitches. Masks and proof of vaccination are required to attend events at the Raven. Submitted by: Wulfe Wulfemeyer Raven Book Store

The tour marks Weird Al’s long-anticipated return to the concert stage after his hugely successful Strings Attached Tour in 2019 where he performed each night alongside a full symphony orchestra. Once again drawing from his back catalogue of 14 studio albums, Weird Al promises to deliver a different set list every night, with no two shows the same. As before, rather than focusing on the hits from his career, the show will feature Yankovic’s non-parody material – the somewhat more obscure pastiches and original songs that have largely escaped the pop culture radar but are adored by his long-time fans. And like the last Vanity Tour, he is leaving behind the high-octane theatrics that he’s known for and going bare-bones – no costumes, no props, no video screens… just Al and his band of almost four decades in smaller, more intimate venues, hanging out on stage, playing music. ---------------- “Weird Al” Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time. A five-time Grammy winner, his 2014 release Mandatory Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200. He is one of only five artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades, the other four being Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2, and Kenny G. On August 27, 2018 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded Weird Al with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Legendary comedian Emo Philips has performed over 7000 stand-up comedy shows across the globe, including a two-week theater run in London’s West End. Career highlights include his acclaimed comedy album E=MO Squared and the hour-long HBO special Emo Philips Live at the Hasty Pudding Theatre. Emo is especially proud, however, of when he got to demonstrate the proper use of a table saw to Weird Al in the film UHF. Submitted by: Box Office The Cotillion

Description: Geeks Who Drink Trivia Night at The Big Rip Brewing Company! Modeled after pub quizzes in Ireland and the U.K., Geeks Who Drink is an authentic homegrown trivia quiz. It’s a great way to drink with friends, without burning brain cells. And it’s where useless knowledge means everything. Our quizzes cover everything from Hungary to The Hunger Games, from science to sports, from the Billboard Hot 100 to Better Call Saul. Each quiz consists of seven rounds of eight questions each, in a variety of formats, including audio and visual rounds. Teams can be up to six players, so bring your smartest friends (or some likable dummies)—or come solo. We can always help you join a team! Winning teams get bar cash and other prizes, depending on the venue. Bonus questions sprinkled throughout the quiz will net you additional goodies. But mostly it’s about establishing your dominance—or at least pleasantly surprising yourself. You’re into that, right? Submitted by: Bryan Carr Geeks Who Drink

On September 12, the Raven is partnering with Ad Astra Running and Pinole Blue for a fun run and talk with Christopher McDougall, author of "Born to Run" and "Running with Sherman!" McDougall’s next book, "Born to Run 2: The Ultimate Training Guide" will be available in December. Come run with us, hear about the new book, and sample a refreshing drink from Pinole Blue at the end. Additionally, booksellers from the Raven will be on hand with a number of running and outdoors-related titles and will take pre-orders for "Born to Run 2." Even better—Christopher will be handing out bracelets that qualify all attendees for a 10% discount on any one book. We hope you will join us for this exciting partnership event! DETAILS: The run will start at the trailhead of the Lawrence River Trails, just south of 8th and Oak in North Lawrence, KS at 6:30 p.m. End of route destination TBD. Coat check is located next to merch by the front doors. All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds unless a show is cancelled or postponed. COVID-19 Show Policy: There are no restrictions on this show but we encourage face masks when you can not social distance and ask that you stay home if you are feeling sick or have been exposed recently to someone with COVID-19. The time has arrived for TESTAMENT to unleash new thunder to the masses and reveal their thirteenth studio album: Titans OF Creation. Just as the elements of this planet thrive within all living creatures, each musician in TESTAMENT represents a necessary component of this latest musical endeavour. Still filled with a massive and unstoppable energy since their last release, TESTAMENT has taken their style to the next level and present an album that is loyal to the roots of traditional thrash metal while still bringing alluring, brilliant, and progressive ingredients to the table. Bass is showcased, new vocals are introduced, and as expected, the guitarwork of Peterson and Skolnick is greatly complex and mesmerizing. Eliran Kantor stepped up once again to create a new piece of artwork for the cover of this release. His classic, almost Renaissance style of painting melds beautifully with the ancient, psychological, and enlightened subject matter of the songs. Three monstrous titans stand in the place where the planets are formed. One pours molding liquid which the others hammer into human DNA, twisting and turning into the ring of a newborn planet. Each titan has the flame of a dying star burning in their chest; the origin of the atoms making up the bodies that are bubbling and boiling on the curves of the spiraling helix. Titans OF Creation has many moods and material contained within; all of which somehow tie into a common philosophy of creation and its necessary counterpart: destruction. “Children Of The Next Level” smashes through the gates as the opening track with a flood of sound that prepares the listener for an abundance of violent thrash. Meanwhile, the lyrics rage about the outrageous philosophies of the Heaven’s Gate cult (founded in 1974). Submitted by: Box Office The Cotillion

Description: Eating healthy – lots of fresh fruits and veggies, lean protein, nuts, seeds, and whole grains – doesn’t have to be more expensive. If you shop smart and plan ahead, you’ll be surprised at how much goodness you can haul without hiking up your grocery bill. In reality, many of those ready-made, super-fast, prepackaged foods cost MORE than homemade foods. They tend to have little nutrition and are loaded with toxic ingredients that can sabotage your health like empty calories, refined seed oils, sodium, and added sugars. Scoring nutrient-dense, fiber-rich foods your body needs to thrive is easier – and cheaper – than you think. Join Brittany, our functional nutritionist, as she busts the “eating healthy is too expensive” myth by sharing simple tips to maximize your nutrient intake without breaking the bank. In her latest non-fiction title, “They Knew: How a Culture of Conspiracy Keeps America Complacent,” Missouri-based journalist and anthropologist Sarah Kendzior builds a compelling argument against the dangers of conspiracy theory culture by excising our nation’s political psyche and historical past. And on September 21 at 7 p.m., Kendzior is visiting the Raven to discuss “They Knew” in conversation with acclaimed Kansas journalist Sarah Smarsh (“Heartland”)! Join us for an evening of incisive political critique as these two extraordinary journalists analyze both what conspiracy theories are doing to our nation, and how they approach researching and writing such critical nonfiction analyses of America today. Thanks to the updated and expanded edition of "How to Resist Amazon and Why," you’ll know exactly how to go about joining the economic revolution, from advocating for fair labor practices to supporting your local, independent bookstores. The Raven couldn’t be happier to host the launch for the 2nd full-length edition of the book that was birthed by the majority owner of the store! "How to Resist Amazon and Why" has remained one of the Raven's top weekly sellers for multiple years running. It started its life as an impassioned Tweet thread, and was expanded into a brief but informative pamphlet stocked on the ‘zine spinner in the Raven in 2019. Written by the Raven’s majority owner, Danny Caine, it has been hailed as the start of a David vs. Goliath show-down in the fight against Amazon. Now, three years later, as this former ‘zine reaches its third print iteration, it’s time to recognize the progress we’ve made in supporting local business and economics. Join us for this celebratory launch event—an evening of reading and discussion with Raven owner Danny Caine, culminating in an audience Q&A and the opportunity to get your copies of the revised edition signed by Caine! Description: Over the past two decades, acclaimed Hawaii-born ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro has proved that there isn’t a style of music that he can’t play. While versatility for any musician is impressive, what’s remarkable about Jake’s transcendent skills is how he explores his seemingly limitless vocabulary—whether it’s jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk or even classical—on perhaps the unlikeliest of instruments, the ukulele. Responding to the urgent calls of his fervent imagination, Jake has taken the ukulele to points previously thought impossible, and in the process, he’s reinvented the applications for this tiny, heretofore underappreciated four-string instrument, causing many to call him “the Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele.” Jake’s incredible journey has taken him from local phenom to YouTube sensation, and from playing tiny clubs to headlining the world’s most prestigious concert venues, like the Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Center and the Sydney Opera House. He’s performed on the biggest TV shows and has released a string of award-winning, chart-topping albums. Just recently, he was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as a member of the National Council on the Arts. It’s fair to say that Jake has picked up more than a few admirers—millions of them, actually—but it wasn’t until he began his latest album that he discovered how many of his fans were, in fact, his very own musical heroes. Two years in the making, Jake & Friends, started out with a modest idea of featuring perhaps two or three guest stars, but the concept quickly grew. His most creatively ambitious project to date, the album features collaborations with a who’s who of music royalty, from Willie Nelson and Bette Midler to Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Loggins.
