The latest in featured KPaRtists is Rebecca Tombaugh, who primarily uses calligraphy pens and acrylic ink and airbrush paint to create what she calls "inkings." She enjoys painting what she sees in life, whether driving to work, taking a vacation in New Mexico or what's in the backyard.

Q: NASA's New Horizons spacecraft completed its flyby of Pluto this week. The tiny planet was discovered by Kansas farmer Clyde Tombaugh in 1930.

Topekan Gil Carter passed away Sunday, 56 years after hitting what may have been the longest home run in professional baseball. Carter was playing for the Carlsbad Potashers In August 1959 when he hit a home run that was reported at 733 feet. Kansas Poet Laureate Eric McHenry tells the story of Carter's homer and the poem it inspired.

The first grade class at State Street Elementary School, taught by Miss Hunt. It was taken in January 1955, shortly after Topeka elementary schools were racially integrated in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling in the Brown v. Board of Education case.
