A poll released today (WED) shows that 77 percent of Kansas voters are in favor of the state’s new smoke-free law. The law, which took effect in July, prohibits smoking in most public places. In addition to finding broad support for the law, pollster Glen Bolger says that 59 percent of voters responded that they would be less likely to support a candidate who wants to repeal it.The poll was paid for by several organizations that lobbied for the law and are now gearing up to fight an expected effort to repeal it. They hired Bolger – who does polling for several Republican members of Congress...

Stay home! That's the word today (TUE) from Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, who's declared a state of emergency in more than 50 counties as a result of the massive winter storm. The eastern half of Kansas has been hit hard by a blizzard and earlier this (TUE) afternoon, the governor and other state officials held a news conference to address the situation. Here's an excerpt from that news conference, beginning with Major General Lee Tafanelli, the state's Director of Emergency Management. A massive winter storm has prompted Kansas Governor Sam Brownback to declare a state of emergency for more than 50 counties in the eastern half of the state. The blizzard has dumped heavy snow and created dangerous driving conditions across Kansas and much of the Midwest. A blizzard warning continues for part of northeast Kansas -- including Lawrence and Kansas City -- until 6 o'clock tomorrow (WED) morning. The rest of eastern Kansas remains under a winter storm warning until 6am.

Fifty-three counties in eastern Kansas are under a state of emergency due to the massive winter storm. Major General Lee Tafanelli (TAFF-uh-NELL-ee), the state's Director of Emergency Management, says heavy snow and strong winds are cutting visibility and creating dangerous driving conditions. State officials are urging people to stay indoors today (TUE) and avoid driving if at all possible. Blizzard warnings and winter storm warnings remain in effect for eastern Kansas until 6am tomorrow (TUE).
